WHAT IS SPRAVATO?

Currently, Spravato is the only FDA-approved form of ketamine for depression, specifically, treatment resistant depression (TRD). This means that studies have shown it to be a safe and effective treatment, and that it is currently the only form of ketamine which may be covered by your insurance for TRD. Other ketamine treatments, such as IV and oral methods, do not have this distinction. Unlike, oral antidepressants, Spravato is not taken daily, but in 2-hour long treatment sessions at the HAPS clinic.
WHAT IS A SPRAVATO TREATMENT LIKE?
Spravato is self-administered in the HAPS clinic, much like other nasal sprays you may take at home. However, trained HAPS staff will be there with you when you do so, and they will check on you over the next 2 hours while the medication works.
Spravato is often described as psychedelic medicine, though the experience it produces is very different from “classic” psychedelic medicines, such as LSD or psilocybin. During your 2 hour treatment session, you may feel some dissociation, sleepiness, or sedation. These effects largely wear off by the time you leave the HAPS clinic, but you will need a ride to and from the appointment, as sedation can continue until you are able to get a good night’s rest.
